5th August Birdman Festival. The Pier, Ilfracombe.

Hi ! welcome to BIRDMAN 2008, North Devon's premier family fun event to be held on Ilfracombe Pier on SUNDAY 3rd AUGUST 2008. We'll be adding news of what's happening in 2008 as and when we know about it. A summary of BIRDMAN 2007 follows:- Well, after a disastrous summer, the sun finally shone and the sky was blue on the day that really counted. Crowds thronged the Pier. Ilfracombe had reportedly never been as busy for 40 years!!! The event comprised the BIRDMAN contest, in which daring entrants launched themselves from the Pier with their home made flying machines and silly costumes in an attempt to fly. The UK TEAM STRONGMAN COMPETITION featured those men you've seen on the telly. They pulled ships and lifted elephants (well, not literally) (www.teamstrongman.co.uk) - the event attracted numerous National level strongmen and one competitor who took part in the World Strongman Championship !! On the TRUCK STOP STAGE, 11 bands / artists of different genres played their way. Our BIG SCREEN, showing live footage of the bands, the STRONGMEN and the Birdman contestants was a real hit. A fantastic day out with 10 hours of almost non stop entertainment in a stunning setting. This non profit making event, raised about £10,000 for Charity and local good causes and was organised by Ilfracombe & District Round Table. BIG THANKS to all those that took part, organised the event, or just paid to get on the Pier for the day.

Watch this space for this year's bands, organised and promoted as ever by Ray Williams - First Step Management - rayatfirststep@yahoo.co.uk and www.myspace.com/themarlboroclub //The Chillis ~ Harry Munk Project ~ Crystal Arcade ~ The Tabloid Press Hip Route ~ Chris Millington ~ Falling Apart ~ The Yum Yums

Areas of Outsatnding Natural Beauty site launch, The Ariel Studio, Ilfracombe April 10th

Responses to the landscape

The Ariel Studios and North Devon Museum Services launch Responses to the Landscape, on the 10th April. This joint project is funded by the North Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty through their Countryside Agency Project Funding.

The website, website address, has six local walks within the Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty; each walk has a printable map and leads you to a viewpoint. Each viewpoint has a downloadable soundtrack provided by six local contributors.

The Ariel Studios created the six audio pieces, lasting between 5 – 10mins that attempt to capture the essence of the North Devon countryside. Contributors were asked to select a location significant to them and create a personal response to it.

Local poet Sam Smith recites his poetry inspired by Ilfracombe, folk artist Chris Millington creates a musical response to Rapparee Bay and naturalist, Trevor Beer, provides his thoughts on North Devon. Whilst the Mortehoe shepherd, David Kennard, talks about his special place Morte Point; geologist Kester Webb imparts his knowledge of Combe Martin and Recyc (North Devon Young Peoples Junk Band) describe The River Taw through sound.

Responses to the Landscape is a pilot for a wider web-based resource, which aims to encourage people to explore and appreciate North Devon.

Please join us at The Ariel Studios, Mullacott, on the 10th April between 3pm and 4pm to hear extracts from some of the contributors’ pieces. Light refreshments will be provided.
